Successful MN fishing opener

I headed up to the Rainy River and Lake of the Woods for the walleye opener and man did we have a blast.  Five buddies and I fished a day and a half and boated nearly 150 walleyes along with 4 sturgeon.  We had 15 walleyes over 27" the biggest being a 30".  The sturgeon were 55", 53", 53", and 50".  It was the best walleye fishing I have ever been apart of and the number of big fish was unbelievable!!   We spent most of our time anchored up and jigging in the current with frozen shiners.  Late ice out is no longer a bad thing in my book because ill be heading north every year from now on.  Under a month until the muskie opener and I cannot wait!  Good luck this season everyone.

Rainy River Round 2

The second weekend north was also a success.  I went back up with three buddies and we managed to have another hundred + fish weeekend.  The BIG walleyes seemed to have scattered some but we still managed to get a 27", 26.5" and 25".  We also boated another three sturgeon measuring 50", 48" and 32".  Most of our fish were in the low 20" range and we kept a nice limit of walleyes and a few saugers.  Tough to beat a world class fishery like Lake of the Woods!

Memorial Day Weekend on Vermilion

I finally got a weekend of fishing in on Vermilion.  The weather was hot and the water temps were warming fast.  I had anywhere from 52-65 degrees depending on where I was on the lake.  I focused mainly on jigging deep water 30-45 feet.  Find the mud/rock line and you will find the fish faster.  Everywhere I fished had lots of little walleyes and some jumbo perch with a keeper here and there.  If you want fast action focus on that depth range.  The dock fishing was great the last two nights with minnows and leeches as late as 2a.m.  Focus shallow before dark to find some nice fish.  Looking forward to muskie opener in two weeks!!

Good luck everyone

MN Muskie Opener

I was lucky enough to catch a fish again this year on opening day.  I fished multiple locations and presentations with mixed results here and there.  The water temps were anywhere from the low 60's to low 70's depending on location and time of day.  Looking forward to another good season on Vermilion and countless hours chasing giant muskies!

July 11th

Walleye fishing was great throughout June but the muskies not so much.  July on the other handed has started off good and the muskies are finally starting to get into their summer patterns.  The fish are showing up on the rocks and the weeds and we have been able to get some nice fish including the last couple nights in a row.  The lure selection has been all over the board but burning bucktails should be the go to in the coming week.  Water temps sit in the high 60's to low 70's during the day.  The mayfly hatch is still in full swing for those of you looking for walleyes it has made things tough.  Look for more pictures in the near future good luck!

July 20th

The last five days on the water have been awesome.  Another 7 fish in the boat with tons of action.  The muskies are definitely going full throttle as every trip is producing multiple follows and some good chances.  The last couple days produced nearly a dozen bites with not alot of hook ups.  The night fishing is producing some good action as well.  Key in on the moon phases!

July 25th

Until the latest rain the water temps were into the mid 70's and now in the low 70's on Vermilion. The past five days produced another 8 fish in the net and some that got away.  The fishing pressure is very bad on the weekends with others casting everywhere.  This makes things tougher so fishing early and late can be an advantage.  Follow the moon phases and keep at it.  As we get into August I believe things will only get better!  Good luck

Mid August

Well things havent gone quite as planned for this month.  We started out with ten straight days of dead calm hot sunny weather and we really struggled to get fish to bite.  Water temps were in the upper 70's and the fish just did not seem active.  Now the water is back in the lower 70's and the fish are eating again.  The last week and a half produced some nice fish and the night fishing has also gotten better.  We have really struggled to keep fish hooked but we are getting bit and thats what matters.  Hoping to close out August with more of a bang and look forward to Sept. to produce more fish!

August 20th

Still managing to pick up a few fish day to day.  Hoping the fishing pressure will start to die down for once this season.  The lake got its usual algae bloom and the water is very green in color now.  Hopefully this will be an advantage for us.

Aug 23

Its been a tough season on Vermilion.  The numbers havent been there but we still have some very impressive fish to show for our efforts! This weekend, one of the absolute coolest things happened in my boat.  Steve Szczeck boated the first Tiger muskie that I have personally ever seen on Lake Vermilion!  It was a beautiful fish at 44.5" and very fat.  It was such an awesome experince to be apart of and probably one of the best of all time!  To top off the weekend my brother and I grinded it out early sunday morning in the wind and rain to boat a giant!  Not sure what the rest of the season will bring but I have a good feeling some more big fish will be hitting the net!

Aug 27th

Headed to the lake with my good buddy Christian for a couple hours of chasing muskies.  He got two nice fish and we had a blast!  Not many people out during the week this time of year which makes it a really peaceful time to fish.  Water temps were 69-71 degrees with the water still being very green.  Looking forward to September and some giant fall fish!

First Week of September

We were able to get on a few fish the first few days into Sept.  The water temps had dipped into the 68-70 range and our now down to as low as 65 degrees.  Action came on all different baits with not one being better than others.  The green water is starting to clear up again.  Cold fronts in the future forecast.  Looks like a cold September ahead of us and hopefully a few fall giants will come as well.  Gook luck out there
